12, 000 ENROLL IN KENYAN TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGES

At least 12,000 trainees have joined the 32 Public Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) to pursue various courses after the government reviewed the entry grades for joining the institutions.

Following the changes, a Student who attained a mean grade of C plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education automatically qualifies to join any public TTC.

The review of the entry grades is among the recommendations proposed by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said the new entry requirements have offered many aspiring tutors an opportunity to pursue teaching courses.

“The number is actually going up. We have over 12,000 students who have joined our 32 TTCs from a number which was 1,700 meaning we were kind of closing teacher training colleges”, said Machogu.

He said the government would implement to totality the recommendations in the Presidential Working Party report.

Machogu made the remarks in Mandera County where he met education stakeholders. The Cabinet Secretary also launched various projects including the Mandera TTC, Mandera Technical Training Institute, and the Mandera County Education Taskforce Report.
