Nyandarua National Polytechnic is making remarkable strides in technical education, emerging as a key driver of youth empowerment and international employability. Through strategic partnerships and forward-thinking programmes, the institution is not only transforming lives locally but also positioning Kenyan talent on the global stage.
Bridging Kenyan talent to the world
In collaboration with the State Department for TVET and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, the polytechnic has facilitated employment for approximately 300 students in the United Kingdom. This initiative is part of a broader push to link skilled youth with overseas opportunities, notably through the Mkulima Majuu Programme.
Chief Principal Dr Felix Mung’atu highlighted that many other graduates have secured meaningful employment in countries such as Dubai, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. “This is significantly improving livelihoods and reducing youth unemployment,” he affirmed.
Rapid Growth and Expanded Access
Reflecting growing confidence in TVET education, the institution’s enrolment has surged from about 1,500 to nearly 10,000 students. This expansion underscores the increasing demand for practical, hands-on training that aligns with market needs.
To ensure training remains relevant, the polytechnic has fully implemented Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curricula. Additionally, through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)programme, 74 candidates have been assessed and certified for skills acquired through experience.
Substantial investments are being made in infrastructure, including:
– General facility upgrades
– Modernized workshops and laboratories
– Installation of two electric vehicle (EV) chargers to support training in hybrid and electric vehicle technology
These improvements are designed to create a conducive learning environment that mirrors real-world industrial settings.
The polytechnic has also strengthened partnerships with industry players to offer students industrial attachments, apprenticeships, and mentorship —ensuring they gain essential workplace experience before graduation.
Looking ahead, Nyandarua National Polytechnic aims to cement its position as a Centre of Excellence in agriculture, engineering, and renewable energy —sectors critical to Kenya’s sustainable development.
As the government continues to champion the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), institutions like Nyandarua National Polytechnic are vital to realizing a skilled, competitive, and economically empowered nation.
