Stakeholders in Kilifi County’s technical colleges are appealing to political leaders to provide full funding for students, aiming to address the critically low enrollment rates currently plaguing the institutions.
Led by Peter Mwangi, the director of technical colleges for the coastal zone, the group emphasised the urgent need to sponsor youth from rural areas fully. This support would allow them to acquire vital skills for advancement, rather than being forced into informal sectors like bodaboda due to an inability to pay fees.
The call was made during the launch of a plumbing course at the Godoma Technical Training Institute (TTI) in Ganze constituency. Stakeholders reported that, despite having a capacity for 3,000 students, the institution currently accommodates fewer than 1,000.
They noted that strategies have already been initiated in collaboration with local administrative leaders to inspire more young people to enrol. This push for targeted funding comes amid ongoing national debates and mixed feelings regarding the state of education financing in Kenya.
