ALBERT OJWANG’ DEATH: AUTOPSY RULES OUT SELF-INFLICTED INJURIES
An autopsy conducted on the body of the late blogger Albert Ojwang’ who died in police custody has revealed that he died from head injuries, neck compression and multiple soft tissue injuries which indicate assault. Dr. Bernard Midia the lead pathologist among five who conducted the post-mortem on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Nairobi Funeral Home, said they are awaiting further forensic analysis of various specimen and evidence from other investigative agencies to corroborate their findings.
Ojwang’ a teacher by profession reportedly died on Sunday, June 8, 2025, while in custody at the Central Police station in Nairobi, where he had been taken on Saturday, June 7, 2025, after being arrested in Homa Bay County on Friday June 6, 2025. Initially, the National Police Service (NPS) said he had sustained injuries after hitting his head in the police cells. Later, NPS said he had been found unconscious during a routine cell inspection and rushed to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment but was declared dead upon arrival. However, his family refuted the claims, saying they were inconsistent with the injuries on Ojwang’s body. On Monday, the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, announced the interdiction of the Officer Commanding Station at Central Police Station and other officers on duty when Ojwang’ was booked.
Meanwhile, a section of Members of Parliament sitting in the National Assembly Administration and Security Committee want Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat to step aside to allow speedy and transparent investigations into the death of Ojwang. Similar sentiments were echoed by activists from Homa Bay County who said Lagat should not be involved in the investigations.
Separately, opposition leaders Raila Odinga of Orange Democratic Movement and Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper Democratic Movement have condemned the death of Ojwang’ in the hands of police officers.
