EACC PROBING 21 CURRENT AND FORMER GOVERNORS
County Governments and County Assemblies have 60 days to establish appropriate internal audit mechanisms to seal avenues for graft. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission EACC issued the notice to counties following a corruption risk assessment that revealed loopholes leading to loss of funds from the public coffers.
21 former, second-term, and first-term governors are under the radar of the anti-graft body amid allegations of graft.The current and former county bosses are being investigated for alleged embezzlement of public funds, conflict of interest, and procurement fraud, payroll fraud mainly through payment of ghost workers, fraudulent pending bills, and blatant disregard of laws relating to financial management.
Former Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, and Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu among others have had runnings with the anti-graft body. County Governments and Speakers of the County Assemblies have been tasked with instituting the proper mechanisms of accountability within 2 months.
