GEN Z PROTESTS : ONE YEAR ON

On Wednesday June 25, 2025 , young people across Kenya took to the streets in honor of the 60 young people who died during the Gen Z-led anti-finance bill protests in 2024.

Despite efforts by police to seal the capital city in various entry points, protesters were determined to get into Nairobi’s Central Business District to make their voice heard.

The events that were broadcast live by various TV and Radio stations across the country saw young people from Nairobi,to Mombasa, Kisii to Machakos and other towns pour into the streets in memory of their peers .

Eight people according to a preliminary monitoring report by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) died in Wednesday’s day long protests in the country, tens of others were injured and property of an unknown value was destroyed in several parts of the country.

Earlier in the day the Communications Authority of Kenya directed all Television and Radio stations in Kenya to stop live coverage of the protests. The CA in the statement saying, “The live coverage of the June 2025 demonstrations is contrary to 33(2) and 34(1) of the constitution and section 461 of the Kenya information and Communication act, 1998”.

However, later in the evening the High Court in Nairobi issued conservatory orders suspending the authority’s directive immediate effect. The court further directed that any broadcasting signal that had been switched off following the directive by CA be restored.
