Machakos Expands Youth Empowerment Programme

Machakos County has scaled up its Youth Empowerment Programme, marking a major milestone in its drive to equip young people with practical, employable, and market-ready skills.

The second cohort of the programme is now set to transition to vocational training centres across the county, following the completion of an initial formation phase. This year’s intake has expanded significantly, with the number of beneficiaries rising from 1,000 to 1,500, while participating vocational institutions have increased from five to eight.

County officials say the expansion reflects growing demand for hands-on technical skills among young people and the county’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment through skills-based training.

Vocational Centres Ready to Receive Trainees

Speaking ahead of the transition, the Principal of Kyemutheke Vocational Training Centre, Ms Rachael Ndivo, confirmed that institutions are fully prepared to receive the trainees.

She noted that the youth will undertake a three-month intensive training programme, after which they will sit for National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) examinations scheduled for April.

“Our facilities and trainers are ready. This programme is structured to ensure the youth gain practical skills that meet industry standards,” Ms Ndivo said.

Positive Impact Already Evident

Before joining the vocational centres, the trainees are currently undergoing a three-week formation stage at the Machakos Youth Training Centre. Instructors report notable improvements in discipline, attitude, and personal development.

An instructor at the centre, Madam Mutheu Muia, described the transformation among the youth as encouraging, saying many are now more focused and ready for the next phase of technical training.

Youth Describe Programme as Life-Changing

Beneficiaries of the programme have praised the initiative, describing it as a turning point in their lives.

Lenah Mutindi, a trainee from Kalama Sub- County, said the programme has equipped her with valuable knowledge and skills that will shape her future.

Another beneficiary, James Mutune from Masinga Sub-County, thanked the Machakos County Government under the leadership of Governor Wavinya Ndeti, noting that many young people had previously lost hope and turned to drug abuse due to a lack of opportunities.

“This programme has given us a chance to learn skills that can change our lives,” he said.

Building on a Successful First Cohort

This marks the second cohort of the Youth Empowerment Programme since its launch last year. Graduates from the first cohort were provided with start-up tools, enabling many to launch small businesses or secure employment in various sectors.

County officials say the programme remains a key pillar in empowering youth, reducing unemployment, and promoting sustainable livelihoods across Machakos County.

As the second cohort moves into vocational training, the county government says it remains committed to investing in skills development as a pathway to economic resilience and long-term growth for young people.
