PARLIAMENT VETTING IEBC SEVEN SHELVED

The vetting of the seven Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC Nominees will not begin tomorrow as scheduled.

The Chair of the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, George Murugara, confirmed that the exercise has been suspended until Wednesday, when the court gives direction on the matter.

The High Court last Monday issued conservatory orders blocking the Committee from vetting the said nominees after two voters petitioned the selection process stating that it lacked transparency, participation and violated constitutional provisions.

The petitioners, Kelvin Roy Omondi and Boniface Mwangi, also allege that four of the seven nominees, namely Erastus Edung Ethekon, Hassan Noor Hassan, Mary Karen Sorobit and Anne Nderitu, are ineligible for the job.

Parliament has a 28-day window for parliament to dispense with the vetting of nominees to IEBC. The Chair of the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, George Murugara, says the committee will heed the conservatory orders issued by the high court barring them from vetting the 7 Nominees.
