TRAINING OF RPL PRACTITIONERS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

The Kenyan government, through the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), is rolling out a nationwide initiative to identify, assess, and certify individuals who have acquired skills and knowledge through informal and non-formal learning but lack formal qualifications.

To support this initiative, the Department is implementing a capacity-building program targeting TVET Trainers and Master Crafts Persons from industry. The goal is to equip them with the skills and competencies necessary to implement Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in line with national quality standards.

TVET Principal Secretary Dr. Esther Muoria, who officially launched the training of RPL practitioners on Monday, May 26, 2025 at the Kabete National Polytechnic noted that although the program is facing funding challenges, it aims to re-tool over 10,000 trainers and industry experts with the andragogical (adult learning) skills required for effective RPL delivery. Participants will undergo a comprehensive 40-hour, face-to-face training programme, coordinated by the RPL Delivery Unit under the State Department for TVET. Upon successful completion, they will be awarded the RPL Practitioner Level 2 Certificate.

The State Department for TVET will also be rolling out the Regional RPL Communities of Practice (CoP). These CoPs are collaborative regional networks that bring together RPL stakeholders- including government agencies, regulatory bodies, industry players, RPL practitioners, Assessment and Placement Hubs (AHPs), and large-scale government projects to drive the adoption and scaling of RPL within their regions.
