TURKWEL MINE TRAGEDY
Four people have died and several others injured after a gold mine collapsed in Turkwel, West Pokot County at around 3am Saturday.
Rescue operations were initiated, with five survivors pulled from the rubble and rushed to Turkwel Health Centre for immediate treatment. They survivors were later transferred to Kapenguria County Referral Hospital for further care.
West Pokot County Police Commander Abdullahi Jire Mohamed confirming the tragedy says the mine has been shut indefinitely as investigations begin to ascertain the circumstances around tragic incident.
This incident comes barely 48 hours after residents protested the closure of the mines amid concerns by local leaders on the environmental impact and safety of the miners.
