UoN COUNCIL MEMBERS, COO ARRESTED THEN RELEASED ON BAIL

University of Nairobi Council Chairperson Prof. Amukowa Anangwe and council members, Dr. Ahmed Sheikh Abdullahi and Carren Kerubo Omwenga, have pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office in the unlawful appointment of Brian Ouma as Acting Chief Operations Officer (COO).
The three council members were released on bonds of 1 million shillings each by Anti-Corruption Trial Magistrate Celestine Okore. Mr. Ouma faced charges of forgery of academic documents and unlawful acquisition of public property of over Sh. 32.4 million shillings being the salary paid to him by the University of Nairobi between 2015 and 2025. He was released on a bond of 4 million shillings.
The four were arrested on Friday by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and processed at the EACC headquarters at the Integrity Centre. Investigations by the anti-graft body established that Mr. Ouma was not qualified for the position and that his appointment was irregular and fraudulent.
The inquiry file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who, upon review, approved abuse of office charges against five University of Nairobi Council Members:
1. Prof. Amukowa Anangwe
2. Dr. Ahmed Sheikh Abdullahi
3. Carren Kerubo Omwenga
4. Joel Kamau Kibe
5. Dr. Darius Mogaka Ogutu
EACC has directed the two other Council members, Mr. Joel Kamau Kibe and Dr. Darius Mogaka Ogutu, to immediately report to the commission’s Headquarters at the Integrity Centre.
