UPSKILLING TVET TRAINERS ON RPL CURRICULUM

TVET trainers in the South Rift region are ready to implement the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) curriculum after a four-day training in Kericho County.

RPL is a process that formally acknowledges skills and knowledge gained through non-formal or informal learning experiences, such as work or life experiences. Trainees acquire formal qualifications by demonstrating their competence through assessment, potentially avoiding the need for traditional training.

The training of trainers (TOT) workshop brought together 45 TVET RPL master trainers and practitioners from four counties, namely Bomet, Kericho, Narok and Baringo. In addition to theory, trainers also used local languages in practical tests without paperwork. A similar workshop was also held concurrently in South Rift, Vihiga County and Nyandarua County.

Kenya National Qualifications Authority Council Chairperson Stanley Kiptis said the capacity building seeks to upskill trainers to implement the RPL curriculum.

Kericho Township Technical and Vocational College (KTTVC) Principal Shadrack Tonui said the TVET trainers have been equipped and are ready to carry out their mandate. He said the trainers will move from the lecture halls to the workplace to ensure that those with skills are awarded certificates.

The State Department Technical, Vocational Education and Training targets to increase the number of trained RPL practitioners from the current 400 to 7,000 to ensure that all TVET trainers become RPL practitioners by December 31, 2025.
