VETTING OF IEBC NOMINEES TO CONTINUE ,COURT RULES
Parliament can now go ahead and vet President William Ruto’s nominees to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC.
High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi while making his ruling Thursday at the same time issued conservatory orders stopping the swearing in and gazzettement of IEBC commissioners until the petition filed challenging the nomination process is heard and determined.
Justice Mugambi noted that the issues raised in the petition touch on the sovereignty of the people and warrant serious judicial scrutiny.
At the same time Justice Mugambi has forwarded the file to the Chief Justice for empanelling of a bench to hear the petition citing public interest the petition raises.
The National Assembly had petitioned the High Court to lift the interim orders that froze the approval process of seven nominees to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), with the MPs arguing that halting the process undermines public involvement and disrupts a constitutionally timed exercise.
