KARUMO TTI SOARS

Karumo Technical Training Institute (TTI) in Meru County, has cemented its status as a powerhouse in technical education, clinching the top spot in the Eastern Region at an impressive 5th place nationally in a recent annual survey.

The survey, which evaluated institutions on critical metrics such as student enrollment, academic consistency, and a stable learning environment free from perennial strikes, placed Karumo TTI among the elite technical institutions in the country.

In an exclusive interview with Vocation Hub Kenya, the Institute Principal, Ms. Florah Kanyua, attributed the success to a deeply ingrained culture of discipline and clear goal-setting.

“Our trainers set achievable targets, and we work diligently as a team to achieve them,” Ms. Kanyua stated. “The institute recorded a mean score of 92 percent last year in November, and we have consistently maintained our performance between 80 to 85 percent.”
Located 23 kilometers from the bustling Meru town, the institute leverages its secluded location as a key advantage for focused learning. Principal Kanyua emphasized that the serene environment, far from urban distractions, allows students to concentrate fully on their studies.

“Young people are usually obstructed by various activities that go on in towns, but ours is a different scenario since we are far away from any town,” she explained.
Beyond location, Ms. Kanyua highlighted the administration’s proactive approach to student engagement. By actively listening to and addressing student concerns early, the institute has successfully fostered a harmonious atmosphere, preventing issues from escalating into disruptions like strikes.

Karumo TTI also stands out for its state-of-the-art workshops and a team of qualified trainers who have been retooled in the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum. This ensures that students graduate with practical, industry-relevant skills that make them highly competitive in the job market. With a substantial student population of 7,312, all of whom reside off-campus in the surrounding community, Karumo TTI has become a vital economic pillar for the area.

“Learners reside in locally constructed apartments and consume locally produced food, boosting local businesses and fostering harmonious coexistence,” Ms. Kanyua noted, adding that this symbiotic relationship has contributed to a noticeable reduction in poverty levels in the area.

Echoing the principal’s sentiments, the Deputy Principal in charge of administration, Mr. Mathews Nkarichia, praised the dedication of both staff and students. He urged them to continue striving for excellence to maintain and even surpass the high standards they have set.
This national recognition is a testament to Karumo TTI’s holistic model of education—one that not only produces top-tier graduates but also acts as a catalyst for community development, setting a benchmark for technical institutions across Kenya.
