Meru Polytechnic Student Fights for Life After Alleged Shove by Landlord in Rent Dispute

A female student from Meru National Polytechnic remains hospitalized with critical injuries following a violent confrontation with her landlord over unpaid rent. The incident has sparked widespread concern about student safety in off-campus housing.

The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the student population, occurred over the weekend at the Kambakia residential area, a common housing zone for trainees.

Imenti North Subcounty Police Commander, Ambrose Kyalo, confirmed the tragic event. According to police reports, the altercation stemmed from a rent issue between the student and her landlord, who is locally known as “Daktari.”

“The student was rushed to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital in critical condition but was later transferred to Lifecare Hospital in Makutano, Meru town, where she is currently admitted and receiving treatment,” Commander Kyalo stated.

In a swift response, law enforcement officials arrested the suspect. He remains in police custody as investigators piece together the exact circumstances that led to the fall.

The legal process is underway, with the police investigating officer producing the suspect in a Meru law court yesterday. The prosecution made miscellaneous applications seeking to detain the suspect for additional days, as police monitor the health situation of the student and finalise their investigations.
This harrowing incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities students often face in their search for affordable accommodation. The pressure of balancing academic work with personal welfare and financial obligations can sometimes place them in precarious situations.
