The National Housing Corporation (NHC) will construct 3,000 units of affordable hostels at Machakos University.
The Corporation Managing Director, David Mathu, said that through the partnership, the university will benefit from low-cost, sustainable housing units, which are part of the corporation’s initiative to address the housing gaps in universities with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). “We plan to inject KES1B towards the initial operationalization of the partnership between the university and the corporation to actualize the 3,000 rental units”, said Mathu.
Machakos University Vice Chancellor Prof. Joyce Agalo said, “The construction of 3,000 hostel units will help us accommodate more students on the campus from the current 500 units out of 12,000 students enrolled in our institution.” Prof. Agalo further said the lack of adequate hostels has locked students from key research ICT facilities and mounting insecurity outside campus. Speaking in Naivasha during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, Prof. Agalo added that the institution is working with NHC in other areas, including research and the construction sector.
At the same time, Mathu said that through the NHC strategic plan 2023-27, the corporation also seeks to construct over 110,000 housing units in the country as part of the Universal Housing Programme.
