FIRST AI POWERED CT SCANNER IN AFRICA INSTALLED

Diagnostic imaging is set to be transformed following the installation of Africa’s first AI-powered 256-slice CT scanner at The Nairobi Hospital.

The scanner, which offers faster, more precise imaging at lower radiation doses, places Kenya at the forefront of medical technology on the continent and will elevate patient care across multiple specialties.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who commissioned the facility, announced a strategic partnership between the Ministry of Health, the Social Health Authority (SHA), and The Nairobi Hospital to expand access to advanced oncology and renal care for eligible SHA patients. Services will include subsidized brachytherapy, radio-iodine therapy, radiotherapy, haemodialysis, and kidney transplants. Noting that over 11,000 Kenyans spent KES 14.7 billion on treatment abroad in 2024, the Cabinet Secretary underscored the need to strengthen local capacity for non-communicable disease care. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving health workforce issues, with resources allocated in the 2025/26 budget to clear arrears and fully implement Return-to-Work Agreements.
