Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat has stepped aside amid a deepening controversy over the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.
In a statement issued Monday, Lagat said his decision was made in good and conscious thought of the weight of his office and the public interest surrounding the case. He further pledged his cooperation with the investigating authorities and expressed condolences to Ojwang’s family.
The blogger’s death in police custody has sparked national outrage, with growing calls for accountability from top police officials. Earlier today former Chief Justice David Maraga called for Lagat’s immediate arrest and prosecution. Reacting to the latest move by the deputy IG former chief justice David Maraga said on his twitter account “stepping aside” of Eliud Lagat is a first step. Next we demand resignation, arrest and prosecution.
There has been sustained and mounting pressure by various quarters from religious leaders, politicians and even ordinary Kenyans for the deputy IG to resign following the death of Ojwang.
