RESTORING THE DIGNITY OF LEARNERS

Over 750 students from low-income communities in Nairobi County have received new school uniforms from the Kenya Power Foundation.

The support, delivered through the Foundation’s Luku Safi (translated as ‘clean look’) initiative, has so far reached students from Korogocho, Mathare, Githurai, and Mukuru Kwa Njenga to restore dignity, reduce absenteeism, and improve academic performance among learners.

In the 2023/24 financial year, 500 students benefited from the programme, with an additional 250 supported in the 2024/25 financial year. The initiative also supports local livelihoods by engaging community-based tailors to produce the uniforms.

“Last year, we reached 500 students in Githurai, Korogocho, and Mathare. This year, we’ve extended support to 250 learners in two schools within Mukuru Kwa Njenga,” said Kevin Sang, Head of Communications at Kenya Power.

“We plan to reach an additional 500 students in the coming year. Luku Safi is about more than uniforms; it’s about restoring confidence, dignity, and classroom focus for underserved learners,” he added.

Mary Muhia, a Grade 4 teacher at Kwa Njenga Primary School, expressed gratitude for the gesture and noted that the uniform donations have transformed student morale and academic performance. “One learner’s scores in mathematics jumped from 30% to 60% after receiving a new uniform. The change in his hygiene, attendance, and self-esteem was remarkable,” she said.

Parents and community members echoed this impact. “Many of us struggle to put food on the table, and school uniforms are a luxury,” said Geoffrey Sittonik, a parent. “

Anne Wanja, a local tailor who participated in making the uniforms, highlighted the economic benefit: “This engagement has boosted our income while giving students a reason to smile. They look smart and feel proud, it motivates them to attend school.”

The Luku Safi initiative is part of the Foundation’s Social Investment and Community Wellness Pillar. Launched in September 2024, the Kenya Power Foundation is driving sustainable social responsibility efforts across all 47 counties, with a focus on education, energy and environment, and community wellbeing.
