Catholic schools in Kenya have been called upon to remain firmly grounded in faith while embracing purpose-driven education to navigate ongoing reforms in the sector.
The call was made by Catholic Diocese of Kitale Bishop Henry Juma Odonya during the official opening of the 12th Catholic Private Educational Institutions Association (CaPEIA) Conference held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Faith and Holistic Education
Addressing education stakeholders, Bishop Odonya emphasized that Catholic education must go beyond academics to focus on holistic learner development.
“Catholic education is about forming the whole person intellectually, spiritually, morally, physically, and socially,” he said.
He urged institutions to remain “beacons of truth and hope” in a rapidly changing world, stressing the importance of nurturing values alongside knowledge.
Aligning with Education Reforms
The bishop challenged schools to align with ongoing reforms, particularly the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, which he described as a major shift in Kenya’s education landscape.
He noted that the transition to senior school pathways requires:
- Strategic planning
- Investment in infrastructure
- Continuous teacher training
Odonya added that the competency-based approach aligns with Catholic education’s long-standing focus on values, creativity and holistic formation.
Safeguarding and Student Well-being
The bishop highlighted the need for schools to address emerging challenges affecting learners, including mental health and social pressures.
He emphasized that institutions must become safe spaces for students, where guidance, protection and care are prioritized.
“Safeguarding is not simply a policy requirement; it is a Gospel imperative,” he said.
Supporting Teachers as Key Pillars
Odonya underscored the central role of teachers in the success of any education system, calling for greater investment in their professional development and well-being.
“A teacher who is valued, supported, and inspired becomes a powerful instrument of transformation,” he noted.
He also encouraged educators to prioritize their own well-being by building support systems and taking time to rest.
The Bishop also urged Catholic institutions to address inequalities in access to quality education, advocating for innovative solutions to ensure no learner is left behind.
He reiterated the role of Catholic schools in shaping responsible citizens, ethical leaders and compassionate individuals.
Renewing the Mission of Catholic Education
The conference, themed “Catholic Schools Rooted in Faith, Rising with Purpose,” brought together school heads, policymakers and religious leaders to reflect on the future of education.
Odonya called on participants to use the platform to strengthen collaboration and reaffirm their shared mission.
“We are called to remain deeply rooted in faith while rising courageously with purpose,” he concluded.
