SIKRI COLLEGE FOR THE DISABLED UPGRADED TO NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC

Residents of Kasipul Constituency have welcomed the elevation of Sikri Technical and Vocational College for the Blind and Deaf to a national polytechnic, a move expected to strengthen inclusive education for learners with disabilities.

Boost for Inclusive Technical Training

According to Principal Evans Oyoo, the new status grants the institution autonomy to design and implement a curriculum tailored to the unique needs of its learners.

He noted that the existing national curriculum has not adequately catered for students with disabilities, particularly those with multiple conditions such as being deaf, blind and speech-impaired.

“We now have the mandate to develop suitable training programmes that respond to the realities of our learners,” he said.

Need for Adaptive Curriculum

Oyoo emphasized that conventional training approaches often disadvantage learners with disabilities, citing challenges in subjects that require visual or complex interpretation.

He explained that a flexible and adaptive curriculum will ensure that all students can effectively acquire skills regardless of their limitations.

The institution had previously sought approval to customize its programmes but required national polytechnic status to proceed. The upgrade, approved by William Ruto, now unlocks that opportunity.

Expanding Opportunities for Learners with Disabilities

The institution is considered unique due to the diverse needs of its students, many of whom require specialized support to succeed both academically and practically.

The upgrade is expected to:

  • Improve curriculum delivery for learners with disabilities
  • Expand training opportunities and course offerings
  • Enhance employability and self-reliance among graduates
  • Position the institution as a centre of excellence in inclusive TVET

Call to End Stigma

Oyoo also urged parents and guardians to enroll children with disabilities in learning institutions, noting that stigma continues to deny many accesses to education.

“These children have the potential to acquire skills, support their families and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

A Step Forward for Inclusive Education

Stakeholders say the elevation of Sikri College marks a significant milestone in promoting inclusive technical education in Kenya, aligning with broader efforts to ensure no learner is left behind.

The move is expected to empower more youth with disabilities by equipping them with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
