Film production hub launched at Dedan Kimathi University to equip youth with digital skills

A new film production hub has been launched at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) in partnership with the Kenya Film Commission (KFC), in a move aimed at equipping young people with practical skills in filmmaking, digital production and content creation.

The facility is expected to provide a platform where young creatives can develop their talents, gain hands-on experience in film production and explore opportunities in Kenya’s growing creative economy.

The hub will offer young people an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in digital and film production, while supporting emerging content creators to develop work for television, film, social media and other digital platforms.

Hub to support practical film and digital skills

The new facility is expected to play a key role in bridging the gap between classroom training and practical experience by providing learners and emerging filmmakers with a space to develop and showcase their creative work.

It will also be used to showcase locally produced films, plays, music and other artistic works, creating a platform for upcoming creatives to reach audiences and explore opportunities to commercialise their talents.

During the launch, speakers challenged young people to take advantage of the growing opportunities in the creative industry by continuously improving their technical and creative skills.

They emphasized that success in the film industry goes beyond production, urging young filmmakers to identify platforms where they can market and showcase their work.

Creating opportunities in the creative economy

The initiative comes at a time when demand for digital content continues to grow across television, film, social media and online platforms.

Stakeholders said young people with the right technical skills can tap into the expanding creative economy by developing content while exploring entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.

The hub is therefore expected to provide a space for collaboration, innovation and skills development, enabling young creatives to turn their talents into sustainable careers.

More than 130 learners who have graduated from film-related programmes at Dedan Kimathi University are expected to be among the first beneficiaries of the facility.

The partnership between the Kenya Film Commission and the university is expected to strengthen film training and production while giving emerging creatives access to opportunities to showcase their work.

The launch highlights the growing role of practical digital and creative skills in preparing young people for employment and entrepreneurship in Kenya’s evolving economy.
