Doctors in Kiambu County have issued a 21-day strike notice over delayed salaries, non-remittance of statutory deductions and shortage of staff.
Speaking in Thika Town, officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) accused the county government of consistently failing to pay healthcare workers on time and of not remitting contributions to the Social Health Authority leaving some doctors unable to access basic healthcare themselves.
Led by the union’s Central Kenya Branch chairperson, Dr. James Githinji, they also criticized the county government for reneging on its promise to hire more medical staff, citing chronic understaffing in health facilities.
The doctors have warned they will go on strike if their demands are not met within three weeks. This raises fears of a looming health crisis in the county.
