Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has advised new officers joining the National Police Service (NPS) to pursue further learning and professional upskilling to adapt to the evolving demands of modern security and public service.
Addressing over 4,000 recruits at the National Police College main campus in Kiganjo during a full-dress rehearsal ahead of their graduation, IG Kanja emphasized that while basic training equips officers for entry into the service, continuous skills development is vital for career growth and confronting emerging global threats.
Adapting to Technological and Emerging Security Trends
The IG noted that further education and specialized training will equip officers to tackle complex criminal networks driven by modern technology, cybercrime, organized gangs, banditry, and gender-based violence.
“I am confident that the recruits have acquired satisfactory training… But I encourage you to keep improving your skills, for you to better your service delivery, and also for career growth,” Kanja stated. “Always seek opportunities to improve your professional skills, bearing in mind that the security environment evolves with technological, socio-economic, cultural, and political developments.”
Key Directives for the New Cohort
Leadership at the National Police Service outlined key operational and professional expectations for the graduating class:
- Political Neutrality: With the country preparing for general elections next year, officers were instructed to maintain complete political neutrality and uphold allegiance solely to the Constitution of Kenya and the law.
- Mental Health and Financial Literacy: Officers were urged to utilize county-level psychosocial support systems, chaplaincy, and counseling departments to manage workplace trauma, alongside practicing prudent financial management to prevent distress.
- Responsible Social Media Usage: Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat cautioned recruits against misusing social media platforms in ways that could jeopardize police operations or violate NPS Standing Orders, calling for strict professional discretion.
The ceremony was attended by senior security officials, including Campus Commandant Nyale Munga and Nyeri County Commissioner Josephat Biwott.
