TVET CURRICULUM REVIEW ON COURSE

The government is committed to the development of the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector through modernizing the curriculum to ensure flexibility for learners to embrace technical and vocational training courses.

Education Ministry Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba says that 108 training programs have been reviewed, with the objective of training graduates who will be absorbed into the job market and also create employment opportunities. “In September 2023, the government rolled out the implementation of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum to enhance the quality of training and produce an internationally competitive workforce to compete both at the local and international employment opportunities,” he said.

Ogamba noted TVET is the bridge between knowledge and productivity that will unlock the youth’s potential in Kenya to industrialize the economy. “TVET is the engine behind the realisation of Kenya’s two boldest visions, Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” noted the Cabinet Secretary.

He made the remarks when presiding over the inaugural graduation ceremony of Riragia Technical Vocational Training Institute in Kitutu Chache North in Kisii County, where 203 students were awarded certificates.  Riragia TVC, located in Marani Sub-County, has experienced tremendous growth since its inception in 2019, with a student population of 2,600 students. The institution is aiming to achieve the 6,000 target for enrolment given to Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs).

Meanwhile, Ogamba also noted the recent approval of the Dual Training Policy, which marked a significant milestone in Kenya’s TVET sector, adding that it would solve the skills mismatch in the colleges. “Further, to ensure that all Kenyans are brought into the ecosystem of skills qualification, the government has stepped up efforts in implementing the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL),” added Ogamba.

According to the Cabinet Secretary RPL initiative will increase the number of Jua Kali artisans and MSMEs that have been assessed and certified through RPL from the current 5,170 to 700,000 by December 31, 2025. Through the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB), 1,850 Jua Kali artisans are set to be supported for RPL certification.
