KENYAN GOVERNMENT STARTS PROGRAM TO CERTIFY SKILLED ARTISANS  

A 50 million shilling pilot program has been rolled out to certify skilled artisans with no formal education. The pilot program supported by Africa development bank (ADB) and the government will see 11 Technical Vocational Education Training institutions offer certification to the artisans that will now see them formally recognized, improve their wages, and open up business opportunities.

A 2019 survey conducted by International Labor Organization and Federation of Kenyan employers revealed that 83 percent of Kenyans are in the informal sector. It is against this backdrop that African Development Bank has partnered with 11 Technical and vocational Education and  training institutes and TVET CDACC to kick start a program that will see the recognition of prior learning competency based curriculum assessment  tool to benefit individuals working in the informal sector.

Speaking during the launch of the pilot project TVET principal secretary Esther Muhoria noted that 1850 skilled artisans with no formal education background are set to benefit from the programme.

The Ps added that assessments will be done at different places in the country where the artisans are located as well as TVETS institutions near them.

The African development bank is funding the initiative to the tune of 50 million Kenyan shillings.

The one year program will be implemented by  Kabete, Eldoret, Nyeri, Nairobi, Kenya Coast,Kisii,Kisumu,Sigalagala,Kitale,Meru ,Rift valley  National Polytechnics  and TVET CDACC.
